Anthonya James is a 1L ChangeLawyer at UC Irvine School of Law. While growing up in Southeast Washington D.C., Anthonya experienced ways in which the criminal justice system fails many Black men and women. She wishes to go into public interest law and study policy. With her degree and her time in law school, Anthonya hopes to grow steps closer to learning how to end mass incarceration and also mandatory minimums. She is aware that these factors target Black communities all across America because they were founded on the same principles as slavery. Throughout law school, she plans to become involved with the Black Law Student Association and assist Black residents near her who are ignorant when it comes to how to protect themselves against a system that was built to work against them. Upon graduation she plans to provide pro bono services to the Black community.
