Donovan J Hicks

Stanford Law

1L Scholar

UPS Diversity Scholar sponsored by Morrison & Foerster LLP

Donovan Hicks is a 1L Change Lawyer at Stanford Law School. Having grown up in a low-income household in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Donovan understood all too well the barriers and privileges an education could offer. While in college, that led him to volunteer for four years at South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS) -- a nonprofit dedicated to representing persons in poverty in their family and bankruptcy matters. Every week he watched SCLS's staff attorneys be a safeguard for the poor, empowering them to be in control of their lives despite their lack of resources. It inspired him to make a commitment to public service. In 2015, Donovan was named a Harry S. Truman Scholar. In 2017, he then became 1 of 12 George J. Mitchell Scholars in the country, receiving an M.Phil. from Trinity College Dublin. In law school and after, Donovan plans to continue his work toward racial justice.
