Isabel Cortes is the proud daughter of Oaxacan immigrants, and currently a 1L ChangeLawyer at Berkeley Law. Through her professional experiences at the California State Senate and Energy Foundation and through her own personal experience as a previously undocumented student, Isabel molded her social justice passion and throughout law school, Isabel will study the nexus between climate crisis and climate migration law. She is interested in providing international legal representation to people impacted by the exacerbation of environmental disasters and climate change. Isabel is committed to creating a better legal system by ensuring that climate migrants receive refugee status and is determined to support communities of color most impacted by environmental injustice. Isabel grew up in rural Humboldt County, is a triplet and one of ten siblings. She attended Mills College, a women’s college in Oakland, California and received with Honors a double BA and Master of Public Policy.
