The daughter of Filipino immigrants, Kristine Avena was born in Long Beach, California and grew up in Orange County, graduating summa cum laude from Chapman University with a double major in Political Science and History. She is the first from her family to graduate college and the first to attend law school as well. A graduate of the UC Hastings College of the Law with a government law concentration, Kristine is a ChangeLawyer who aspires to become a judge in order to make a positive impact in the community through increased access to the legal system. In 2015, she participated in the Washington, D.C. Semester Program and served as an intern for Congresswoman Judy Chu. In 2017, she was a law clerk at Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach, a non-profit in San Francisco, to pursue her passion to serve the public. She also served as a judicial extern for Justice Goodwin Liu at the California Supreme Court and as a litigation intern at the San Jose City Attorney’s Office. Her interests include learning about history, listening to jazz, and playing her clarinet and soprano saxophone. Kristine will now be serving as a DOJ Honor’s Program Attorney in the Executive Office for Immigration Review.
