Melissa Owens is a ChangeLawyer because she is dedicated to diversifying the legal profession and using her skillset to help those who need it most. From working with Free to Thrive assisting victims of human trafficking to working in the Fresh Start Unit at the Public Defender's Office, she is dedicated to giving back to her community. Working with both of these organizations has enabled her to challenge the justice system and advocate for clients who truly need it. To sharpen her advocacy skills, she competed on California Western School of Law's trial team, representing her school in national competitions. While in law school, she served as the President of the Women's Law Caucus (WLC) where she oversaw one of the largest student organizations on campus. She used the position of WLC President as an opportunity to raise the consciousness of both law students and the surrounding legal community with regard to legal, political, and socioeconomic issues affecting women. Additionally, she served as a large group tutor for nearly two years, teaching 1L students skills to help them succeed academically.
