70% of the general population struggles with Imposter Syndrome, the feeling that one is not cut out for the work one is doing or aspires to do, combined with a fear of being discovered as a fraud. Ironically, high achievers and those in certain fields (such as the law) are at unique risk of this often hidden epidemic and suffer a greater sense of isolation and anxiety because of it. Attorneys equipped to recognize, prevent, and disrupt Imposter Syndrome experience greater leadership presence and increased professional fulfillment and engagement, as well as improved wellness, which contribute organizationally to increased retention as well as more meaningful inclusion. Q: How do I get over the idea that I'm a loser because I've had different experiences based in my marginalized identities?
A: "First, I encourage you to think about how you are defining 'winner' and 'loser.' The way 'winner' (or 'leader') is defined for us is by the majority and in the image of the majority. We have to really think about those terms and decide what we think are 'winner' qualities and what are 'loser' qualities.
As I wrote about in this blog post (and often speak about), I used to have terrible Imposter Syndrome about public speaking. I was convinced I was a 'loser' public speaker. When I stopped trying to fit the model of the traditional 'winner' public speaker and instead explored what makes me unique (including from my own experiences of marginalization and the compassion and vulnerability they fostered in me), I was able to build a new model of a 'winner' public speaker – one that leverages my unique abilities.
In a nutshell, I recommend you explore your unique skills, experiences, and perspectives and think about how they make you uniquely qualified for the work you are doing or want to be doing."
